Island Grand Tour

The trip nobody you know has taken — pine-shaded Čikat Bay, batana boats, and two ferry days that ask a little patience.

Photo: Falk2, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

The Island Grand Tour trades a measure of convenience for the most distinctive three weeks on offer. The shape starts familiarly — Venice, then Bled — but at the Croatian coast it turns seaward: five nights in painterly Rovinj, a car ferry across to the island of Lošinj for four nights on Čikat Bay, and a ferry back to finish on the Opatija Riviera.

Lošinj is the heart of the argument. The bay is a sheltered half-moon of pines and promenade where the Habsburgs sent people to breathe, and its resorts are the most indulgent beach stays in this comparison. Paired with Rovinj's bell tower and batana boats, the middle of this trip looks like nobody else's photos from an Italy-and-back summer.

The honest cost is two ferry days. Jadrolinija's Brestova–Porozina crossing is short, but a ticket does not reserve vehicle space — in August you queue, and the door-to-door day can stretch to five hours at the upper bound. The plan buffers both crossings generously and keeps a no-ferry fallback in reserve, but those two days are real, and the toddler will experience both of them.

The routeVenice → Lake Bled → Rovinj → Mali Lošinj → Opatija Riviera
Estimated total$41,000–$79,000
On the roadAbout 778 km between stays, plus two vehicle-ferry crossings
Longest transfer4h30–5h door-to-door upper bound (Rovinj → Mali Lošinj, road + ferry queue)
Why choose it
  • Čikat Bay — the most indulgent, distinctive resort pause in any route
  • Rovinj's old town and Golden Cape, the Adriatic at its most photogenic
  • A trip that feels genuinely unlike a standard Italy holiday
  • Same lowest-cost Zagreb flight exit as the Slow Adriatic
What to weigh
  • Two ferry days that can each reach five hours door-to-door
  • Vehicle space on the ferry cannot be reserved — August means queues
  • One more move than the Slow Adriatic, with a toddler in the car for each
First stop on every route · 24–28 July · 4 nights

Venice and the Biennale

Venice in late July is hot, bright and busy in the middle of the day — and quietly magical before nine and after six, when the day-trippers thin out and the light goes gold on the water. The plan treats the city accordingly: four nights as a landing pad, not a checklist. One afternoon to recover from the flight, two short Biennale sessions split around naps, and a slow lagoon day while the exhibition is closed on Monday.

The hotels below were chosen for exactly this rhythm. Each has a private dock or a flat, bridge-free walk from one, a suite with a separate living room where the baby can sleep behind a closed door, and somewhere pleasant to spend the hot hours — the Cipriani's garden pool being the gold standard. Location matters more than usual with a stroller: every bridge is a staircase.

Arriving by water

You land at Venice Marco Polo's general-aviation terminal on the eastern edge of the airport, a few steps from the lagoon. There is no terminal crowd to negotiate: a porter moves the bags, and the water taxi is waiting at the GA dock.

The taxi crosses the open lagoon and enters the city by canal — roughly 30 to 35 minutes to a hotel dock on Giudecca or the Riva. It is the single best arrival in Europe and the moment the trip starts feeling real. Ask the hotel to book its own boat or a Consorzio Motoscafi taxi, confirm the dock name in writing, and have the car seat conversation ahead of time: water taxis have none, so one adult holds the baby on the bench seating.

If plans change

If weather or slot restrictions move the flight to Treviso (TSF), it adds a 40-minute car transfer to the Venice water-taxi piers at Tronchetto or the airport dock — an inconvenience, not a problem. Keep the water-taxi booking flexible on arrival day.

Four nights in Venice, day by day

Friday24 July

Land, water taxi to the hotel, unpack properly and stay close. Early dinner, early night — the jet lag does the scheduling today.

Saturday25 July

Arsenale in the morning, arriving as it opens at 11:00. Back to the hotel for lunch and the nap; an optional late-afternoon return — the Arsenale stays open to 8:00 PM on Saturdays.

Sunday26 July

Giardini from about 11:00 to 2:00. The national pavilions sit in actual gardens — shade, gravel paths and room for a toddler to walk between them.

Monday27 July

The Biennale is closed. Take a private boat to Burano and Torcello, or declare a pool day and let everyone reset.

Tuesday28 July

Optional short Biennale return in the morning, then the 10:00 departure north. The weekly pass makes this stop-in free to skip or take.

61st International Art Exhibition · In Minor Keys

9 May–22 November 2026 · 11:00 AM–7:00 PM; Arsenale until 8:00 PM Friday/Saturday; closed Monday

Buy the weekly pass, not the single entry

The standard ticket admits you once to each venue — fine for adults, unworkable around naps. The weekly pass lets you leave for lunch and a sleep and walk back in, which is the entire strategy. Children through age six are free with a complimentary digital ticket.

The soft landing between Venice and the coast

On this route Bled is a deliberate exhale — a soft transition between the intensity of Venice and the more ambitious island portion ahead. The goal is to restore the toddler's schedule: same beds for four nights, a kitchen, big mornings outside and unhurried afternoons.

Keep the first day lake-only. The pletna boats, the island church, the flat lakeside path — it is all within a few minutes of the apartment, and none of it needs a plan.

The shape of a day
Morning

Lake promenade and a pletna boat before the crowds arrive.

Midday & nap

Home for lunch and the nap; the apartment kitchen earns its keep here.

Afternoon

One short outing — the castle, a swim at the lido, or nothing at all.

Worth doing
  • Pletna boat to Bled Island at nine, when you might have it to yourselves
  • A short Julian Alps outing — Vintgar Gorge with the carrier, or the Pokljuka forest
  • Swim mornings at Grajsko kopališče, the castle lido below the cliff
  • Kremšnita, twice, without apology
With the toddler

Use these four nights to bank sleep before the coast. Pack and refuel the car the evening before the Rovinj drive so departure morning stays calm.

1–6 August · 5 nights · Istria, Croatia

Five nights in Rovinj

Rovinj is the Adriatic at its most painterly — a Venetian bell tower over a tumble of ochre houses, fishing boats in the harbor, the whole old town crowded onto a knuckle of rock in the sea. Five nights here balance that postcard with resort-style downtime in the pine forest of Golden Cape next door.

The trick with a toddler is sequencing. The old center is beautiful but cobbled, stepped and slow — carrier territory, best after the nap when the light is good and the heat is fading. Mornings belong to the forest park and the pool.

The shape of a day
Morning

Golden Cape forest park — shaded paths, quarry cliffs, calm coves for a paddle.

Midday & nap

Pool and nap at the hotel through the bright hours.

Afternoon

The old town after four: the market, the harbor, dinner with the boats coming in.

Worth doing
  • Climb through the old town to St. Euphemia's bell tower plaza at golden hour
  • A batana — Rovinj's flat-bottomed wooden boat — around the harbor
  • A boat day to Sv. Katarina or Crveni Otok, the islands just offshore
  • Golden Cape's shaded seaside paths, morning after morning
  • One buffer day before the ferry — the schedule below explains why
With the toddler

Golden Cape is the release valve: when the old town's cobbles and crowds are too much, the forest park absorbs an entire morning within a stroller's reach of the hotel.

6–10 August · 4 nights · Čikat Bay, Croatia

Four nights on Čikat Bay

Lošinj is the reason this route exists. A long, pine-covered island reached by ferry, with a sheltered bay — Čikat — where Austro-Hungarian doctors once sent patients for the air. It is the most indulgent and distinctive stop in any version of the trip: sea, pines, promenade, and very little else to do. That is the point.

Keep the agenda deliberately light. The resort, the protected bay and the shaded waterfront paths are the experience; anything more is a bonus for a calm-sea day.

The shape of a day
Morning

Beach and pool while the bay is glassy; the water here is calm, clear and shallow at the edges.

Midday & nap

Long lunch in the pines and the nap upstairs.

Afternoon

The shaded Čikat promenade, an ice cream in Mali Lošinj's harbor, dinner early.

Worth doing
  • The Čikat Bay promenade under the pines — flat, shaded and made for a stroller
  • Mali Lošinj's harbor front, one of the prettiest in the Adriatic
  • A dolphin-watching trip — the island hosts a resident bottlenose population — only in calm weather
  • The Fragrant Island Garden of native herbs, a gentle hour with a toddler
With the toddler

The bay is sheltered and the beaches shelve gently — the easiest sea swimming of the trip. Confirm ferry conditions the day before departure and keep that morning empty.

Four nights to land the trip

After the ferry day, Opatija is where everyone recovers — the old Habsburg resort town with its endless seafront Lungomare, belle-époque hotels and shallow beach-club coves. Four nights give the trip a soft landing: no more moves until the flight home, and nothing on the schedule that cannot be skipped.

The final day is intentionally quiet, because the airport transfer to Zagreb begins early on departure morning. Everything before it is promenade, pool and long dinners.

The shape of a day
Morning

Lungomare stroller walk — Volosko for coffee, Lovran the other way.

Midday & nap

Beach club or pool; nap through the heat.

Afternoon

Gardens, gelato, early seafood dinner above the water.

Worth doing
  • The Lungomare in both directions across the four days
  • A half-day lunch in Lovran's stone old town
  • Hotel beach club afternoons in the shallow coves
  • A last slow dinner in Volosko's fishing harbor
With the toddler

Plan the Zagreb airport run with a two-hour road allowance and the hotel's own car. Everything else about these four nights is recovery.

What this route costs

Ranges cover the full party — two adults + one 16-month-old in a purchased airline seat — for 21 nights, 24 July–14 August 2026. They include lodging, route transport, commercial return flights, dining, activities and a 10% contingency reserve, and exclude inbound private charter to venice, shopping, travel insurance and discretionary gratuities.

Island Grand Tour$41,000–$79,000$37,400–$71,800 before reserve

About $3,000 more at the floor than Slow Adriatic; island resort nights and ferry logistics create the premium.

Lodging$22,400–$44,600
Live / quoted basis

Venice, Bled, Hotel Lone, Čikat Bay and Opatija exact-party snapshots converted at the planning FX rate.

Ground transport$2,300–$5,100
Mixed evidence

Cross-border car/private drivers, child seat, fuel, tolls and two vehicle-ferry days.

Return flights$7,500–$11,100
Live / quoted basis

Indicative three-seat business-class totals from Zagreb to JFK.

Dining$4,500–$9,000
Planning allowance

Resort breakfasts plus a luxury-casual coastal dining mix.

Activities$700–$2,000
Mixed evidence

Biennale, ferries, boats, optional dolphin excursion and family admissions.

Contingency$3,700–$7,200
Planning allowance

10% reserve, with extra emphasis on ferry queues and missed-sailing recovery.

Methodology

Lodging and flight lines use the live or indicative snapshots in this dossier. Ground transport, dining, activities and contingency are planning allowances until vendor quotes are obtained.

Before booking

Our recommendation

Start with the Slow Adriatic.

It still has the gentlest toddler rhythm. Rail to the Riviera is the strongest alternative when trains and a settled Provence week matter most; Adriatic to Albania is the farthest-reaching choice without an air bridge. Venice books first whichever route wins, but the new routes need a separate three-night quote.

  1. Venice suite and water taxi

Venice is common to every route and its late-July inventory moves first — the Cipriani lagoon-view suites especially. Book the suite, ask the hotel to arrange the water taxi from the General Aviation dock, and get the crib and dock name confirmed in writing.

  2. The Biennale weekly passes

Two adult weekly passes, bought on the official site; the baby's ticket is complimentary. The pass is what makes the nap-based Biennale plan work, since it allows unlimited re-entry all week.

  3. The anchor stay of your chosen route

Slow Adriatic: the seven-night Istria residence. Island route: the Čikat Bay resort. Alpine route: Lake Fuschl. Rail route: the seven-night Provence villa or hotel. Albania route: the seven-night Vlorë/Radhimë hotel. Pool barriers, crib, high chair and a closed bedroom are conditions of booking.

  4. Lock the route-defining transport

For the original routes, secure Bled and any cross-border car. For Rail to the Riviera, hold the direct Turin–Chambéry train and Avignon automatic rental. For Albania, book the private en-suite ferry cabin before committing to hotels, then obtain written Montenegro permission and Green Card coverage from the rental company.

  5. Return flights and the final hotel

The route decides the final airport: Zagreb, Zürich, Nice or Tirana. The flight home begins after the ground itinerary; it is never used as a bridge between stops. Buy three seats — the purchased toddler seat remains the plan of record — then match the final hotel and car return to departure time.

  6. Car seat, cancellations and the small print

Specify an automatic car and rear-facing seat in writing, use private drivers only as contingencies, re-check every cancellation deadline against the quote date, and reconfirm cribs a week out. Every rate shown here is a research snapshot or planning range, never a hold.

Who this itinerary is best for

Choose the Island Grand Tour if distinctiveness is worth real logistics to you — if the picture of a pine-shaded bay that took a ferry to reach beats another beautiful-but-reachable coast, and if two carefully buffered queue days feel like a fair tariff for the most memorable middle week of the three.
